A Journey South - September 11, 2019 - October 3, 2019

We have not been south since the fall of 2016 when we went seeking some heat and ended up in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The main incentive for this trip was to attend the Bearded Collie Club of America National Specialty in Asheville, NC which also was celebrating the club's 50th anniversary. We would be showing Josie in both the puppy sweepstakes and the main specialty.

Josie left ahead with our friends to do some show preparation so we would only have Weston with us for the first leg of the trip. Our general plan was to take our time wandering our way to Asheville, enjoy a variety of events involved in the specialty then to continue our wanders south to visit some friends in Tarpon Springs for a couple of days then head back north along the Atlantic coast.

You may notice that we use a lot of KOA (Kampgrounds of Ameica) parks. In addition to the aspects of dependable quality and ease of booking, we have been collecting points on their Value Kard Rewards program for a number of years. This year we did not yet have enough points to requalify for our VIP membership and this was the last month so we needed a few more nights to push it over the top. In addition, we have not redeemed any points for about 3 years. Even though we collected most of those in Canada, they have equal value in the USA (e.g. 6,500 points gives $10 local currency) so we have been saving them to redeem south of the border.

We always enjoy hearing what folks think about our site. You can reach us at no.comment@roadtreking.ca if you take the "no." off.

For those of you who mostly want to see the pictures, we have assembled a slideshow of all the daily pictures. 📸Click to get the full slide show

Day 1 - September 11, 2019 - Over The Border

The main objective for today was to get over the border so we could start stocking the galley. We had purged anything that might cause problems crossing the border. We decided to cross at Hill Island then pick up Interstate 81.

We set off about 10:45 in pleasant 25°C weather. We made a quick stop at the Ingleide ONroute then next at the 1000 Islands Duty Free on Hill Island just before crossing over into the USA.

We had no problem with the customs and immigration process and were shortly on our way down I81. From there we set course for 1000 Islands / Association Island KOA on the shores of Lake Ontario. We arrived a little after 3:30 PM and set up camp. It was a bit "breezy" but pleasant. Rod took Weston for a good wander of the camp (see pictures). We managed to dig up a bite to eat from the stuff remaining after the galley purge.

Day 2 - September 12, 2019 - Down Through Penn State

We woke up to a cool morning (14°C), packed up and set off about 9:00. Our first stop was the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Cicero, NY where we stopped for a good breakfast. After scanning the store after breakfast we found a Lodge Cast Iron Griddle being sold at a discount. Rod could not resist so it was added to the galley.

We were planning to stop at the Camping World near Syracuse but discovered Gander RV & Outdoors of Cicero right next to the Cracker Barrel. We decided to take a look and discovered that they were now part of the Camping World family. We picked up a couple of items and crossed the Camping World stop off our plan having effectively accomplished it.

We finally got rolling south again about 12:15 PM and made our way to the Pennsylvania Welcome Center a bit after 2 PM. Rod did some checking for a place to stay for the night. Ideally we would have picked a place near Hershey, PA but most RV parks wanted multi-night bookings since "America's Largest RV Show" was under way in Hershey. We set our sites further south in the general direction of our friend's place in Maryland.

After a couple of stops to eat and pick up some bits for the galley we made our way to Ben Franklin RV Park in West Manchester Township, PA where we set up for the night. For dinner we popped over to The Sherwood Inn near by where we had a good pub feed.

Day 3 - September 13, 2019 - A Stop In Maryland Then On To VA

The first destination for today is our friend's place in Maryland. We set off at 9:30 in 17°C weather and found our way to Phoenix, MD in about an hour. The coffee was on and our little girl doggy, Josie, was happy to see us. We had a love-in with all the other beardies too. It was decided that Josie would continue to stay with them until we got to the specialty in Asheville.

We got back on the road a bit after noon and set course for Natural Bridge, VA. We had booked 2 nights at Natural Bridge / Lexington KOA Holiday since it was the weekend for this year that Value Kard Rewards members get a free night. We had not visited the Natural Bridge area for more than 35 years so it seemed a nice spot to stop for a bit.

We arrived a little before 5 PM and set up camp. Rod took Weston for a bit of a wander around the camp then we headed over to the Pink Cadillac Diner just down the road for a quick dinner. After dinner we popped over to the Food Lion in Buena Vista to get some supplies before heading back to camp.

Day 4 - September 14, 2019 - Revisiting Natural Bridge

We took a leisurely start to the day finally setting off about 10:50 to explore about. It was a pleasant 22°C so we decided to shop a bit since it was cool enough to leave Weston in the Roadtrek.

Our first stop was Layne's Country Store We were pleased to see that they had a good selection of Rada Cutlery on display. We have used Rada products for many years finding them and excellent value. The knives really hold their edges well. We picked up a large metal spatula to use with our cast iron pans and yet another Super Parer (we probably have 6 or more spread between home and the Roadtrek), which we find to be an exceptionally useful kitchen tool.

We wandered on to the Cattleman's Market where we picked up some fine meat products and a couple of local wines.

Having suitable topped up the galley, we decided to go visit Natural Bridge State Park. We had last been in the area in the late 1970's or early 1980's with a couple of friends to attend a square dance festival held at what is now Natural Bridge Historic Hotel & Conference Center located just above the attraction. It was all privately owned back then but it has been turned over to the state back in 2013. It all started when Thomas Jefferson bought the bridge and 157 surrounding acres from King George III of England for 20 shillings in 1774.

Since it was warming up a bit, we took Weston with us for a good exploration of the site. You can share some of it in the pictures for today.

After a good dose of exercise we found our way back to camp a bit before 4 PM. We feasted on some goodies from the galley and got an early night.

Day 5 - September 15, 2019 - On To Asheville, NC

Having enjoyed a day off the road, it was time to move on to Asheville. While we were not planning to check in to the specialty hotel until the 17th, there were events relating to the specialty already going on and we wanted to look in on them.

We got on the road at 10:12 on a lovely 23°C morning. By 3:45 PM we had made our way to the https://koa.com/campgrounds/asheville-west/ Asheville West KOA where we booked in for a couple of nights.

We had some dinner at camp and just relaxed while we planned out the coming days around Asheville.

Day 6 - September 16, 2019 - Flying Beardies

We started with a good breakfast at camp then. By 11 it was already around 25°C so about 11:20 AM we wandered our way over to the Haywood County Fairgrounds where the agility events were being staged.

We managed to find a somewhat shady parking spot handy to the events and, it turns out, handy to where our friends T&L were set up. We promptly claimed Josie back for the day and spent the afternoon watching agility events and visiting with old friends.

The pictures for the day are not the best since the light was not adequate to capture a lot of the action but you can get an idea. Agility is exciting to watch any time but show this size with all beardies is awesome. The relay competition at the end of the afternoon was especially exciting.

Many specialty participants were off to Evening at the Biltmore Estate. We found it a bit pricey back when we were booking given that it was not certain we were going back then so we passed it up. Instead we stopped at the Black Bear Café where we had a good, filling and reasonable dinner.

We got back to camp about 8 PM and just relaxed.

Day 7 - September 17, 2019 - On To Specialty Site

When we first considered attending the Bearded Collie Club of America National Specialty we booked a room at The Crowne Plaza Resort® in Asheville, North Carolina which was the "host hotel" for the specialty and the location of most of the core activities. We figured we could always cancel it if we did not go or found an especially good place to camp. Since the weather was warm we decided to use our reservation.

We left camp about 8:50 AM. Since it was a pleasant 19°C we decided to stop at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store for a leisurely breakfast before heading over to the Crowne Plaza. We were able to get the room next to our friends T&L. Besides being socially convenient, it meant we could help them with the 7 beardies they had with them for the week. We could also reconnect with our little girl, Josie.

We enjoyed watching some of the Obedience & Rally events and generally wandering about getting "the lay of the land", visiting with old friends and meeting some new ones.

That evening we had the Welcome Party at 7 PM. We packed it in relatively early after walking some dogs and planning the morrow.

Day 8 - September 18, 2019 - Sweepstakes

Today the conformation judging starts with the puppy and veteran sweepstakes. Josie was entered in the "Puppy 6-9" class so we had to get her ready for that. She did not win anything but had some good practice for the actual specialty judging tomorrow.

After lunch we took a run into town to get some potables and snacks. On the way back we could not resist dropping in to Jacksons Western Store which was situated just near the entrance to the Crowne Plaza. Rod found a couple of interesting hats but, fortunately for the budget, none fit.

We spent the evening at The Annual Awards & Auction Dinner. The food was good and the auction fun as usual. We managed not to win too many bidding wars so we helped to raise money without contributing too much of our own.

Day 9 - September 19, 2019 - Specialty Class Judging

Today is the start of the main specialty judging. Since there are almost 200 dogs entered, the judging is split over 2 days. This first day is dedicated to the "Class Judging" which includes all dogs entered in classes other that dogs with their championship entered directly in the best of breed judging.

We had a bit of a break since the girls are judged after the boys and Josie was entered in "Puppy (6-9 Months) Bitches". She showed pretty well but came second to a girl that went on to take Winners Bitch. He brother, Bertie, did win his class earlier though and T's boy Archie took Winners Dog.

With Josie out of further competition we just relaxed and watch the show.

Day 10 - September 20, 2019 - Specialty Best Of Breed Judging

Today we are on to picking the big winners. The Best of Breed class had some 33 dogs and 28 bitches. Add to that Winners Dog and Winners Bitch along with winners from veteran and performance classes and you have a big batch of beardies to pick through.

Our friend L's boy Henry came out with "Select Dog" (basically the 2nd best dog) and her daughter's girl Mandy took best veteran and brood bitch. T's Archie took Best of Winners over the girl that beat Josie and Bertie took Best Puppy over the same girl. Pretty good results for "Our Gang".

If you did not understand any of this, you are probably in good company. Suffice to say we had a good week.

Day 11 - September 21, 2019 - Roadtreking Again

Well, enough of this hotel stuff. Time to do some wandering. We packed up all our stuff including both of our "Roadtreking Beardies" and checked out about 9:50 on a warm 24°C morning.

The Roadtrek started the day asking for an oil change. Somehow I think the last one to did it forgot to reset the system but we would check into it.

Lillian wanted to poke around Historic Biltmore Village which we did. Since it was pretty warm for leaving the dogs in the RT, I took them for a walk while the "chief shopper" checked things out. I used a couple of waits in the shade to search for someone who could change my oil. We usually need someone with a high door and a pit.

Lillian satisfied her shopping needs in about 1½ hours so we went to check out a local Jiffy Lube. It seems the could not fit us but suggested one in Hendersonville that was a converted fire station so should be big enough. We headed off to that Jiffy Lube where they were able to get us changed in about an hour.

From there we made our way to Asheville East KOA Holiday rather than heading further onward since Lillian wanted to catch up laundry and a few other things. Both dogs were also having minor stomach issues so it would give them a break.

Day 13 - September 23, 2019 - On The Road To Georgia

On our way at 9:10 on a cool 14°C morning. We stopped for breakfast at a nearby Cracker Barrel Old Country Store before hitting the road south towards Georgia.

We made it to the Georgia Welcome Center by about 12:30 PM. After that we made our way down to Cordele KOA with only a brief stop at a Pilot Travel Center for fuel and comfort.

We got into the KOA about 5 PM and spent a quiet evening.

Day 14 - September 24, 2019 - Down To Florida

Back on the road at 9:15 AM. Today was primarily a drive down I75 into Florida. It was mostly a pleasant and uneventful drive until we got to Ocala, FL.

It seems an Ocala police officer, Daniel Wagner had been killed in a motorcycle accident the previous Thursday and today was his funeral. All but one lane of I75 was closed for about 20 miles while a massive funeral procession made its way south. There were hundreds of squad cars as well as motorcycles both from the police and the Copperheads Motorcycle Club. While it was interesting, it did slow traffic considerably.

We eventually cut off on FL-56 then FL-54 to make our way to Clearwater / Lake Tarpon KOA where we set up camp for a couple of days. We let our friends P&G know that we had finally made it to town. They arranged to meet us at the KOA for 6 PM.

They arrived pretty much on time and after a bit of a visit where they got to meet Josie they took us over to Capt'n Jack's Waterfront Grille where we had a great feed and generally caught up after many years. You know you are with old friends when you just "resume the conversation".

We got back to camp about 9:30 PM after taking a bit of a tour of the area. We made arrangements to resume the conversation tomorrow evening.

Day 15 - September 25, 2019 - Exploring Tarpon Springs

We took a quiet morning around camp catching up on a few things. By the time we got ready to do some exploring around 1 PM the temperature was up to 37°C. We first stopped at a local bank to get some cash then popped in to a Starbucks for some iced coffee and snacks.

From there we made our way to Hickory Point RV Park which had previously been recommended by P&G. We were given a nice tour around and decided we would move down there tomorrow for a couple of days.

From there we made our way to Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks to poke around a bit. We found a place to park for free so we took the dogs and set about exploring the area. We spent 1½ hours poking around including a short break where we sat in the shade and enjoyed some sangria.

We got back to camp about 4:30 PM and relaxed with a cold drink while we waited for P&G to pick us up for dinner around 5.

We first made a stop at their home and had a quick tour before heading over to nearby https://www.cypressrun.com/ Cypress Run Golf Club where they are members. We started at the bar where we challenged the young lady serving to create some good Margaritas. She stepped up to the challenge. We eventually moved into the dining room for a fine dinner. We made it back to camp about 9 PM and chatted for a bit before packing it in.

Day 16 - September 26, 2019 - Shifting Camp

Time to move camp. We checked out by 10:00 AM. It was already 27°C but still cool enough to leave the dogs for short periods with the fan on full. We made a stop at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tarpon-Mall/434909506954617 Tarpon Mall where we popped in to the Publix food store and the nearby Petco store.

We made out way from there to Hickory Point RV Park where we checked in and set up camp about 11:30 AM. We spent some time having a bite of lunch and generally exploring this pretty park.

P&G arrived about 3 PM and we set about some more exploration. They took us to several area parks and beaches. We took time for a nice walk on the beach along the way.

I happened to mention to P that I was looking for a "Portable Induction Cooktop" small enough to use in the Roadtrek. P took this as a challenge and we checked Lowe's, Walmart and a variety of other choices including a marine supply store without luck. You could order them online but none were available off the shelf. We finally threw in the towel and went back to camp to let the dogs out for a bit.

A bit after 6 PM we set off for Queen's Pizza & Restaurant where most tucked into pizza but Rod indulged in a Gyro Pita given the Greek history of the restaurant. It was excellent!

We got back to camp a bit after 8 and had a bit more of a visit before calling it a day.

Day 17 - September 27, 2019 - A Boat Ride

This morning we relaxed around camp, explored and walked the beardies. P&G picked us up around 1 PM and we headed over to Port Tarpon Marina where they keep their boat.

We had a lovely tour of the area having a look at some of the sites we had seen on land from a different perspective. The boys even took time for a swim. Once me made our way back to the marina, we had a drink at the bar while P&G cleaned the salt water from the boat and motor before it was stored away again.

We then returned to camp to let the dogs out for a bit before heading over to P&G's place for an excellent BBQ steak dinner. Good food, good drink and the best company - what more can you ask. We mentioned that we were thinking of spending a night at the St. Petersburg / Madeira Beach KOA in the area we used to hang out over the years. They asked if they could join us for part of the day and we were delighted to accept.

We made it back to camp about 9:15 and communed with the doggies before relaxing for the night.

Day 18 - September 28, 2019 - Down To Madeira Beach

We had originally envisioned stopping in Tarpon Springs for 2 days. Now 4 had evaporated like nothing and we were stretching our Florida visit by another day around St. Petersburg Beach.

We set off at 9:48 with the mercury already at 33°C. We took our time wandering down US19 Alt to Clearwater then we cut out to Gulf Blvd. to enjoy the scenery. We went as far down as John's Pass Village & Boardwalk before heading to St. Petersburg / Madeira Beach KOA. Rod took Josie for a thorough exploration of the camp. A very pretty location beside Long Bayou.

P&G caught up around 2 PM and we made our way back to John's Pass where we stopped to explore for a bit including a stop for a snack and drink. We then went back up to the Reddington Shores area where we took some time to walk the beach.

We stopped back at camp about 6:30 PM to let the dogs out for a bit. From there we went to check out Conch Republic Grill in North Reddington Beach. We remember it as Ballyhoo's from the ancient past but were delighted to find much the same menu, atmosphere and quality. We shared a fine dinner before heading back to camp about 9.

Day 19 - September 29, 2019 - Heading Back To Georgia

Sadly it is time to head back northward. The good news it that we have time to do more exploring as we go. We pulled out about 8:40 AM with the temperature already at 30°C We found our way over to I-4 and got past Tampa before stopping for a bite of breakfast at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store near Lakeland. We eventually picked up I-95 near Daytona Beach then followed it up until we got to Savannah South KOA about 4 PM.

We took a relaxing evening wandering around the camp and foraging in the galley.

Day 20 - September 30, 2019 - Revisiting Myrtle Beach

A shorter run planned for today. Our target for the day was https://koa.com/campgrounds/myrtle-beach/ Myrtle Beach KOA Resort Still, we got under way by 9:00. It was a cooler 25°C this morning. Since we had time, we decided to take US-17 through Charleston, SC rather than mostly I-95. We got to camp by 2 PM and just relaxed for a bit.

About 4 PM we wandered our way over to http://www.broadwayatthebeach.com/ Broadway at the Beach Where we walked with the dogs and shopped a bit. After the temperature dropped a bit we popped the dogs into the Roadtrek with the fan on full while we stopped at https://www.margaritavillemyrtlebeach.com/ Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville for some dinner and, of course, a Margarita or two.

We made it safely back to camp a little after 8 PM.

Day 21 - October 1, 2019 - Up To Cape Charles, VA

We were originally thinking of moving up to Virginia Beach today but decided to push just a bit further to Cape Charles on the far side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. We got going about 8:15 with the thermometer reading a pleasant 22°C. We made steady progress with a couple of comfort and snack stops. We arrived at Cape Charles / Chesapeake Bay KOA Resort by 4 PM.

We checked in and took a nice walk around the area including a beach walk. Unfortunately the seaside Jackspot Bar & Grill was only open around the weekend.

Since we could not eat on site, we headed over to The Shanty in Cape Charles and had a great seafood feed while watching a pretty sunset over Chesapeake Bay. We rolled back to camp about 9 PM and got a good night.

Day 22 - October 2, 2019 - A Ferry Ride To Cape May

Today we wanted to get to Cape May, NJ. The complication for that is it means crossing on the Cape May - Lewes Ferry.

We got rolling about 8:45. It was already 31°C. With only a stop for a quick snack, we made our way up to Lewes, DE a bit after noon.

We bought our ferry ticket but had a hour or two to kill so we looked around the area then stopped in town for Lillian to shop a bit and Rod to walk the dogs and entertain the folks attracted to our hairy dogs.

We eventually boarded the ferry and had a beer on the top deck while we crossed Delaware Bay. We got to the Cape May KOA about 4:45 PM and picked a nice spot.

While we were sitting around camp we got a call from Rod's uncle back home. He had been suffering from cardiac and pulmonary issues for some months and had reached the point where he was moving to a palliative care center near home where he had volunteered for many years. We had planned to continue up the coast possibly into NB and NS before heading home but we decided to head more directly home over the next 2 days.

Since our coastal trip was winding up, we decided for another seafood feed so we headed over to The Lobster House where we indulged in just that.

Day 23 - October 3, 2019 - A Long Wet Drive Home

We set off at 8:10 just as it was starting to rain. Our plan was to go as far as Saugerties / Woodstock KOA a bit north of Kingston, NY. When we reached the area in early afternoon it was still pouring rain so we decided that sitting on the road was just as good as sitting around a camp site in the rain so we decided to just keep rolling up I-87.

We got to Plattsburgh (where P&G lived many years) about 6 PM so we stopped at The Texas Roadhouse for a good dinner and to sort out our customs declaration. Back on the road by 7 PM then pretty much straight home with only a brief visit with customs & immigration. We pulled into the driveway about 8:20 PM.
