A Gathering In The County - November 20 - 23, 2018

In early November Lillian was chatting with her brother in Mississauga, ON when she mentioned that we were considering a mid-week run to Prince Edward County (aka "The County"). Whe he asked when we said "probably the week when the The Barley Room had their next Kitchen Party". It turns out that was November 22nd.

A week or so later that called back to see if that was still the plan. They were considering coming down to our mid-way meeting point since we were planning to be there anyway. A more detail schedule check show we could make it work for Tuesday to Friday to take advantage of a mid-week "3rd day half price" deal. We arranged for Weston to visit with his old family in St. Lazare and plans were set.

Day 1 - November 20, 2018 - Off To The County

It was a slow start but we finally pulled out of the driveway about 10:40. We first made our way out to St. Lazare where we dropped Weston off at our friend Tom's place. Tom has a friend visiting who also has 7 beardies so Weston has lots of company this week. We also gave the Roadtrek a bit of a run to keep the batteries strong.

After a bit of a visit we hit the road again making a brief stop in Lancaster to pick up a snack for ourselves and to top up the gas tank. Our next stop was in Brockville to pick up a couple of Lattés.

We went in to the county by route 49 heading into Picton where we made a stop at Sobeys and the LCBO for "supplies". We pulled into The Waring House about 3:50 PM and checked in. By the time we hauled our stuff to the room, R&A landed and started setting up their digs.

We met up a bit after 5 PM and wandered over to the pub and shared a plate of nachos along with some beverages. After that we went back to R&A's room where she put out a great "charcuterie board" with all kinds of goodies. We foraged on that for an excellent dinner. After catching up on the news for a bit we all wandered off for an early night.

Day 2 - November 21, 2018 - East County Wanders

We met for "included" breakfast at 9:30 and had a passable bite while we planned the day. R wanted to visit Lake on the Mountain over towards Glenora. We took that as a starting point and head off about 10:45. The sun was out but it was both cold and very windy. Once there R & Lillian braved a walk to view the lake. I went the other way to look down at the Glenora Ferry struggling its way over toward Adolphustown. It appeared to be crabbing about 30° to port to maintain something like a straight track across.

Since we were off to the east we decided to next pop over to Waupoos Estates Winery to see what was new. On arrival I was pleased to see that their EV charging station was free (as in available and no charge to charge) so I parked there and plugged the car in for a bit. Given that the restaurant was closed for the season, we would not be around long enough for a full charge but probably long enough for a free run back to Picton.

We did a bit of tasting on a couple of new products and purchased a couple of items as gifts. We also took a quick peek across the street at Clafeld Cider House and picked up a couple of other items.

We then headed back to Picton where we had a bite of lunch at Gus's Family Restaurant which was excellent as usual. We shopped around the area a bit after lunch eventually working our way back to The Waring House for about 2:30 PM where we headed back to our rooms for a bit.

We met back around 5:30 and worked our way over to The Barley Room Pub for a bite of dinner and some good music. The Frere Brothers were already getting set up for one of their "kitchen party" evenings. Bill McBurney was also there - seems he did not head south again this year.

As usual, a number of other performers joined in over the evening and generally the music was good with some decent audience participation. The girls headed back to the room after a couple of sets but R & I hung in until the end.

Day 3 - November 22, 2018 - West County Wanders

We started a bit earlier today with breakfast at 9:00 before hitting the road about 10:00. We started west along the Loyalist Parkway (ON 33) towards Bloomfield. Most took off to shop a bit before we continued on west to Wellington seeking a shop that Lillian wanted to show her sister-in-law. Once there it was determined that the shop was actually back in Bloomfield so we did a 180° back and made another shopping stop.

Eventually we made our way back west of Wellington far enough to make a stop at Sandbanks Winery. We stopped briefly to check what was new and pick up a couple more bottles of Baco Noir.

From there we tour our way along 33 until it met route 2 near Trenton. From there we headed back east to Belleville where we popped into The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant for a bite of lunch. It was our first visit since it was closed to renovations after the flooding in 2017. It finally reopened in August 2018. Food and service was as good as ever. We largely foraged on appetizers.

After lunch the girls wanted to pay their respects to the Shorelines Casino Belleville while in the area. They played for an hour or so while the boys landed at the bar where R could watch some of the US Thanksgiving football action. Against all odds, both girls came out ahead a bit so we hit the road before they gave it back.

We made our way back to camp where we relaxed a bit before gathering in R&A's room for another "charcuterie board" dinner. After dinner the boys took off to The Barley Room where the blues night artist was Morgan Davis He was born Detroit, relocated to Toronto in 1968 then to Halifax in 2001. He was really happy to see us since the bar was pretty empty. Eventually some others rolled in but in the interim we had a really decent private concert.

After the show we chatted a but before rolling back to the rooms.

Day 4 - November 23, 2018 - Homeward Bound

We checked out and hit the road together by about 9:30 AM. We skipped our "included" breakfast and made out way to Darlin' Debbie's just before the bridge to Belleville. It is a super spot for some good home cooking and her breakfasts are simple but hard to beat. In particular I love her corned beef hash topped with a couple of poached eggs.

After an excellent breakfast we parted ways. We started along route 2 far enough to get some gas at $0.949 before heading up to the 401 and turning east. We made a coffee stop in Brockville as usual then made our way almost home.

We made a stop at the Sail in Vaudreuil so Lillian could check out if any down vest were on sail for "Black Friday". She was lucky - got exactly what she wanted. We then made our way home arriving about 3:20 PM.
